I am completing my Sports Mentorship with Coach Thomas Woodson of Notre Dame College. I have always wanted a career in collegiate athletics, specifically football. I wasn't sure what position I would seek due to my lack of knowledge of the different positions available within collegiate football. After beginning the MBA-Sports Administration, I have been exposed to many different career options.
BUT! This answer stumped me on the spot. My younger brother had many different options for schools that recruited him for the collegiate level. I was very interested in the process that entailed recruiting high school athletes. I have been exposed to football for many years. When I finally understood football, I threw myself into the sport. I started watching as many games as possible, taking notes, and listing questions I had for anyone who could answer my questions. As my knowledge increased, I wanted to be able to dissect film on my own. I am also a very outgoing individual I want to be involved in visits as well setting up camps for prospect student-athletes. A significant reason that has led me to want a career in collegiate football recruiting is the possibility of changing a student-athlete's life. I have seen many instances where student-athletes were given the opportunity to turn their life around or leave harsh environments by being given a chance to play a collegiate sport. I explained to Coach Woodson that being able to provide opportunities to different athletes from different areas would be very rewarding. To have a hand in providing such an opportunity would, again, be very rewarding.
Coach Woodson began to explain how many student-athletes he had worked directly with and how they expressed the impact he had had on them while he was their coach. He then begins to explain collegiate football recruiting has its ups and downs. He began to express how he believed this would be a great position for me. As women are entering the field and, more specifically, black women. He believes that I should continue to pursue this career choice, no matter how hard it gets or the lack of motivation. Coach Woodson expressed even after my mentorship he would to continue to mentor me and teach me the ins and outs of collegiate football recruiting. I believe that I picked a great mentor who has the best interest in my future career choice. I am very excited to be with him and learn as much as I can.
