In a previous meeting, Coach Woodson and I talked about looking at the attitude of the student-athlete. He mentioned that when he begins coaching again, he will look into this more. So, I talked about how I would go about looking at the overall character. While I was at McKinley High School working with their football team, I noticed how uncoachable many of the athletes were. If I were a recruiter visiting for some of their games, I wouldn’t have thought twice about recruiting them. Those who have great leadership skills. Many student-athletes focus on their physical attributes to get recruited. I believe the unconscious things, such as overall character, are important as well.
Coach Woodson talked about how he contacts and maintains contact with prospective athletes. He talks about the importance of contacting parents. I mentioned before I believe it is important that parents have a feel that their child is safe, receiving quality education and competing successfully at the collegiate level. He explains that he makes everything very personal and he is just himself when he is in contact with families and recruits. He makes sure to build rapport and strong relationships.
